Abstract

A systematic experimental study was conducted to investigate the influence of seepage-induced erosion on the mechanical behavior of soils in order to reveal the degradation mechanisms of stress-strain characteristics,fail-ure strength,and shear strength parameters under conditions of fine particles loss.The saturated remolded speci-mens with various degrees of erosion were prepared by the salt particles substitution method and unconsolidated and undrained triaxial compression tests were conducted to systematically analyze their mechanical response patterns.The results demonstrate that:1)the seepage-induced erosion markedly alters the stress-strain curves which exhibit strain-hardening types and a systematic downward shift with the increase in the mass fraction of lost fines,indicat-ing concurrent deterioration of stiffness and strength of soils;2)The failure strength shows an approximately linear negative correlation with the fraction of particle loss,while the reinforcing effect of confining pressure gradually di-minishes with erosion intensifying;3)The shear strength parameters are highly sensitive to seepage erosion.The maximum decrease of cohesion and internal friction angle reaches up to 10.24%and 48.28%,respectively.This work quantitatively establishes the relationship between erosion degree and mechanical parameter degradation,clarifies the evolution mechanism of soil strength under the combined action of confining pressure and seepage erosion,which provides essential experimental evidence for evaluating seepage erosion hazards in engineering practice.
