Abstract

The impact of the current regulations of the 200-meter fire compartment length for utility tunnel cable chambers on engineering design and urban aesthetics was investigated in this study.Through fire dynamics simula-tion and multi-factor system analysis,the scientific methods was explored for setting fire compartment lengths.A full-scale cable chamber fire model was established by FDS software under four typical scenarios(fire compartment lengths of 200 m/400 m,and fire sources at mid/end sections).From perspectives of fire loss control,personnel e-vacuation,chamber ventilation,and power distribution,the impact of the key factors of fire loss control,personnel evacuation safety,coordination of ventilation-power distribution on the fire compartment length of utility tunnel ca-ble chambers were systematically analyzed.The findings indicate that longitudinal partitions along the cable cham-ber have limit effectiveness in reducing fire impact,while the segregation measures to prevent cable-to-cable igni-tion are critical measures.Under the four typical scenarios,the personnel evacuation requirements should be com-prehensive considered as well as overall arrangement of coordination layout of fire compartments,ventilation zones,and power distribution zones with fire compartment length of over 400 meters.
