Abstract

In order to investigate the effects of different planting densities on the yield and agronomic traits of spring maize in northern Hunan,this study conducted a split zone experiment in Anxiang County,northern Hunan in 2019.Three planting densities(60 000,75 000 and 90 000 plants/hm2)were used as the main zones,and eight maize varieties that were previously screened for their tolerance to density and suitability for mechanical harvesting were used as split zones to analyze the effects of planting density on spring maize growth process,stress resistance,and yield.The results showed that planting density has no significant effect on the growth process,but plant height,spike height of spring maize show an increasing trend with increasing planting density.The yield of spring maize were significantly increased with the increase of planting density.The spike length,number of grains per row,and number of grains per spike significantly decreased with the increase of planting density,while the bald tip length significantly increased.However,there was no significant change in grain weight and number of rows per spike among the different planting density.There is a significantly interaction between variety and density.The empty stem rate and lodging rate were significantly increased under high planting density(90 000 plants/hm2).However,there are significant differences in risk among varieties.The suitable planting density for Xiangkangyu No.7,Jiuyu Y02,MC1418,Denghai 605 and Denghai 618 was 75 000 plants/hm2,the suitable planting density for Fengken 139 and Jingnongke 728 was 90 000 plants/hm2,respectively.Yudan 9953 has high yield under high density condition,but the risk of lodging was prominent,and anti lodging measures need to be taken accordingly.These results of this study can provide a basis for customized cultivation and risk management of spring maize varieties in northern Hunan.
