Abstract

[Objective]To understand the impact of natural-social composite systems on regional water resources,this study analyzes water quantity-type and water quality-type scarcity from the perspective of the water footprint,establishes a compre-hensive evaluation index,and assesses regional water scarcity conditions.[Methods]Taking the cities along the Yellow River in Henan Province as an example,and comprehensively considering industrial,agricultural,domestic,and ecological water use,the water footprint composition was analyzed,and sector-specific water footprints were calculated.The ratio of blue water footprint to water resources was used as the water quantity scarcity index,while the ratio of gray water footprint to water re-sources served as the water quality scarcity index.The types and severity of water scarcity were comprehensively assessed.[Results]From 2012 to 2022,the total water footprint of cities along the Yellow River in Henan Province generally exhibited an increasing trend.Notably,blue water footprints showed an increasing trend,while gray water footprints demonstrated a de-creasing trend.The agricultural sector was the largest contributor to the water footprints of cities along the Yellow River in Henan Province,with a multi-year average agricultural blue water footprint of 10.797 billion m3.Gray water footprints were determined by agricultural sources.Among these cities,Xinxiang had the highest blue water footprint,followed by Kaifeng,while Xinxiang also showed the largest reduction in gray water footprint,followed by Zhengzhou.The water quantity scarcity index ranged from 0.73 to 2.82,with an average of 2.21.The water quality scarcity index ranged from 0.45 to 1.92,with an average of 1.70.Overall,water scarcity severity gradually increased from west to east,with Puyang in the east being 8.89 times more severe than Sanmenxia in the west.[Conclusion]Water quantity-type scarcity and water quality-type scarcity in-teract with each other.Regions with more severe water quantity-type scarcity tend to experience worsened water quality-type scarcity.For the cities along the Yellow River in Henan Province,water scarcity is primarily characterized by water quantity-type scarcity,constituting the primary cause of severe water scarcity in this region.
