Simulation of endogenous radiation effects on plutonium oxidation states in neptunium-plutonium nitrate aqueous solutions

Abstract

The radioactive decay of neptunium and plutonium,along with the presence of fission fragments,influ-ences the valence state of plutonium during the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuels.In this study,radiolysis experi-ments were conducted on nitric acid systems containing Np and Pu to investigate the influence of internal α and γsources of Np,Pu,and fission fragments on the valence state of Pu in nitric acid solutions.The experimental re-sults showed that in the presence of γ radiation from a 238Pu solution,approximately 24%of the initial Pu(Ⅲ)(2.5×10-3 mol/L)was oxidized to Pu(Ⅳ)within 24 h,and about 70%was oxidized to Pu(Ⅳ)within 112 h.However,when 239Pu,which emits no γ radiation,was used in the solution,the valence state of Pu showed no re-markably change.Furthermore,based on the decay characteristics of actinide elements and the reaction kinetics of nitric acid aqueous solutions,a radiolysis model of nitric acid systems containing Np and Pu was constructed to ex-plore the reaction mechanisms of irradiation fields affecting the Pu valence state.This study is expected to provide a theoretical foundation and valuable insights for ensuring the safe operation of nuclear facilities in reprocessing plants.
