Effect of vicinal diols oxidation on properties of cellulose-based water retention material and its applications

Abstract
Vicinal diols is a common structure in polysaccharide biomass,and its oxidative modification can increase the diversity of functional groups and enhance the properties of polysaccharide-based materials.OCMC(oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose)was obtained by oxidizing the vicinal diols in CMC(carboxymethyl cellulose)using ammonium persulfate.Then OCMC/PAA composite gel was prepared by mixing OCMC with PAA(polyacrylic acid).The obtained OCMC/PAA composite gel was characterized by SEM and FT-IR.Water absorption,water retention,and adhesion experiments were carried out under various conditions.The results show that oxidation of vicinal diols group can form more functional groups such as aldehyde groups and carboxyl groups,which makes the OCMC/PAA composite gel has excellent water retention property.Compared to pure PAA composite gel and CMC/PAA composite gel,the water retention performance is improved by 31.86%and 21.98%,respectively.Additionally,the oxidation of the vicinal diols in the OCMC/PAA composite gel results in good adhesion properties.The use of OCMC/PAA composite gel in loess can reduce the soil loss rate from 37.32%to 14.79%.The research findings can further improve the application of cellulose derivatization,and provide ideas for the modification of biomass materials and the development of new water-retaining materials.关键词
