Research progress on iron-based catalysts for electrocatalytic ammonia synthesis via nitrate reduction
摘要
Abstract
In response to the escalating challenges of energy shortages and environmental pollution,the development of renewable energy sources and advanced environmental remediation technologies has become increasingly urgent.The nitrogen cycle is essential for maintaining ecological balance and sustaining biological activity.However,the excessive application of fertilizers and improper industrial discharges have led to significant disruptions in the nitrogen cycle.Among these,nitrate(NO3-)pollution in aquatic environments has resulted in serious threats to ecological security and human health.Ammonia(NH3)is an important non-carbon energy carrier and is widely used in agriculture and pharmaceuticals.Compared with the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process traditionally used for industrial NH3 production,the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction(NO3RR)under mild conditions offers a promising alternative.This approach not only enables the efficient recovery and utilization of nitrogen resources from wastewater but also provides a dual benefit of addressing energy and environmental challenges.To meet the demand for highly active and selective NH3 synthesis,the design of catalysts with tunable structures and controllable properties is of significant importance.Iron-based catalysts,due to their natural abundance,distinctive NO3-adsorption characteristics,and high selectivity toward NH3,have exhibited significant potential in NO3RR applications.This review summarizes recent advances in iron-based catalysts for NO3RR,with a particular focus on the mechanisms governing the adsorption of key intermediates and the generation of active hydrogen species.It further analyzes the relationships between catalyst structure and NH3 yield.Finally,current challenges in this field are outlined,and future directions for research and development are proposed.关键词
