Effects of Plant Polyphenols on Rumen Fermentation and Physiological Functions in Ruminants:Mechanisms and Regulation

Abstract
Polyphenols,a diverse class of naturally occurring compounds abundantly present in plants,can be broadly classified into four major groups:phenolic acids,flavonoids,phenylpropanoids,and lignans.When present at appropriate concentrations,polyphenols not only optimize rumen fermentation and effectively mitigate methane emissions in ruminants,but also exhibit remarkable physiological activities,including antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,and gut health-promoting effects.This review provides a comprehensive overview of the microbial mechanisms underlying the regulation of rumen fermentation and methane production by polyphenols,as well as the molecular bases of their physiological functions and practical applications.By elucidating the specific pathways through which polyphenols exert their functions in ruminant production,this paper aims to establish a solid theoretical foundation for their broader use as sustainable and efficient feed additives.关键词
