Effects of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation on Diaphragm Function in ICU Patients With Mechanical Ventilation

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the impact of neuromuscular electrical stimulation(NMES)on diaphragmatic function in ICU patients with mechanical ventilation.Method:A total of 66 patients with mechanical ventilation admitted to the People's Hospital of Fujian Traditional Medical University from January 2024 to April 2025 were selected as the research objects and divided into the NMES group and the control group according to the random number table,with 33 participants in each group.All patients received symptomatic treatment for their primary diseases,and the NMES group additionally started neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy until weaning successfully.Diaphragmatic function was assessed using ultrasound on the 1st,3rd,7th days of treatment and before weaning from the ventilator,and the mechanical ventilation time and the 30-day weaning success rate of the two groups were compared.Result:The diaphragm mobility,diaphragm thickness and diaphragm thickening rate all showed a gradually decreasing trend in the control group.There was no statistically significant difference in diaphragm thickness,diaphragm thickening rate and diaphragm movement between the two groups on the 1st,3rd and 7th days of treatment.Before weaning,the end-expiratory diaphragm thickness,diaphragm thickening rate and diaphragm movement in the NMES group were all higher than those in the control group,with statistically significant difference(P<0.05).The mechanical ventilation time in the NMES group was shorter than that in the control group,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The 30-day weaning success rate of the NMES group was higher than that of the control group,but there was no statistically significant difference(P>0.05).Conclusion:NMES can improve diaphragmatic function to a certain extent,reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation,and increase the weaning success rate.关键词
