Which Drum Did Mi Heng Strike:An Iconographic Comparison and Interpretation of the Drum in Mi Heng Striking the Drum at the Bozhou Huaxilou

Abstract
Mi Heng Striking the Drum is carved on the large beam between the pillars of the Huaxilou(Flower Opera Stage)in Bozhou.Taking this woodcarving as the research object and guided by a three-tiered framework,the paper applies methods from music iconography to analyze the scenes depicted in the carving.Using the drum struck by Mi Heng as the point of departure and situating the woodcarving in its historical context,the study traces changes in historical records across different periods and examines the placement,playing technique,and form of drums in the period of late Eastern Han and the Three Kingdoms.It seeks to verify whether the portrayal of drum performance from the Three Kingdoms period,as rendered in the Qing-dynasty Huaxilou,is historically consistent.The paper further explores the music-iconographic value embodied in the Huaxilou,thereby deepening our under-standing of the musical-cultural characteristics and historical significance of this ancient structure.关键词
