Spatiotemporal patterns and environmental response of NDVI synamics on the Loess Plateau:an eco-geographic zoning perspective

Abstract
[Objective]Limite research has examined the spatial-temporal variations of vegetation NDVI and its response to environmental drivers across distinct eco—geographical subregions of the Loess Plateau,including the Mesothermal Semi-Arid Region,Middle and Temperate Arid Region,Warm Temperate Semi-Arid Region,Pla-teau Temperate Semi-Arid Region,Warm Temperate Sub-Humid Region,and North Subtropical Humid Region.[Method]To address this gap,we employed multiple statistical approaches,including one-way linear regression,Mann-Kendall test,coefficient of variation,random forest,and partial correlation analysis to explore the spatiotempo-ral patterns of NDVI and its response to environmental factors across these various eco-geographical zones of the Loess Plateau from 2003 to 2020.[Result]1)NDVI across the Loess Plateau exhibited an overall increasing trend from 2003 to 2020,with a spatial gradient decreasing from southeast to northwest.The highest NDVI values oc-curred in the North Subtropical Humid Region and the lowest in the Middle and Temperate Region.Interannual varia-tion in NDVI increased across the entire region,with the Warm Temperate Semi-Arid region showing the greatest growth rate and the Plateau Temperate Semi-Arid Region the smallest.2)Water use efficiency was identified as the dominant factor across the region,while the importance of other driving factors influencing NDVI at the regional scale,although the relative importance of environmental drivers varied among eco—geographical zones.)In semi-arid and arid regions of the Loess Plateau,NDVI was significantly affected by multiple environmental factors,with water use efficiency exhibiting the strongest positive correlation across all sub-regions.In contrast,,in semi-humid and humid regions,NDVI was most strongly and positively correlated with mean and daily minimum air temperature.[Conclusion]Vegetation greenness across the Loess Plateau improved significantly from 2003 to 2020,with NDVI showing distinct spatial patterns and a sensitive response to environmental variations across eco—geographical zones.These findings highlight the importance of eco-geographical differentiation in understanding vegetation dynamics and guiding regional ecological restoration.关键词
