Iodine nutritional status among pregnant women in Xianning,Hubei:A cross-sectional study from 2022 to 2023

Abstract
Objective:Iodine is an essential nutrient for the health of pregnant women and fetuses,and monitoring iodine status is crucial for preventing iodine deficiency.This study aims to assess the iodine nutritional status of pregnant women in Xianning City,Hubei Province,and to guide appropriate iodine supplementation for this special population and ensure adequate iodine intake. Methods:Pregnant women who attended outpatient clinics or underwent physical examinations at Xianning Central Hospital from Feb.2022 to Nov.2023 were included.A stratified random sampling method was used to select 120 pregnant women.Salt iodine and urinary iodine concentrations were measured.The median salt iodine and urinary iodine levels of pregnant women across different counties/districts of Xianning,as well as urinary iodine levels at different gestational stages,were compared and analyzed. Results:Daily household salt samples collected from the 120 pregnant women yielded a median salt iodine concentration of 25.1 mg/kg.The iodized-salt coverage rate was 94.2%,the qualified iodized-salt rate was 98.2%,and the rate of consuming qualified iodized salt was 92.5%.There was no statistically significant difference in median salt iodine concentration among pregnant women across the counties/districts(H=3.62,P=0.462).A total of 120 urine samples were collected,yielding a median urinary iodine concentration of 143.8 μg/L.The weighted prevalence of iodine deficiency(<150 µg/L)was 59%(95%CI 56%to 62%).Differences in urinary iodine levels among counties/districts were statistically significant(H=25.4,P=0.003).Median urinary iodine concentrations in early,mid-,and late pregnancy were 148.6,141.7,and 139.3 μg/L,respectively.Differences in urinary iodine across gestational stages were not statistically significant(H=2.84,P=0.242). Conclusion:The median urinary iodine concentration of pregnant women in Xianning City(<150 μg/L)indicates insufficient iodine nutrition.Enhanced attention and public health measures are needed to monitor and improve iodine status among pregnant women in this region.关键词
