Abstract

Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China.At present,several sand hills are distributed around Poyang Lake.Although many studies suggest that these sand hills have mainly been formed through aeolian processes,in this study,a sand layer with obvious mud laminae and mud clasts is identified within a sand hill at Shazhou Village in Hukou county,Jiangxi province.To further investigate the origin of this sand layer,two samples(20231231-1 and 20240106-2)were collected for grain size analysis.The results are as follows:both samples are dominated by medium sand and are poorly sorted.The frequency distribution curves of the two samples show a clear bimodal pattern,with the main peak at medium sand and a secondary peak at silt.The grain-size probability cumulative curves of both samples show that the sand layer comprises one traction population,two saltation pop-ulations,and four suspension populations.Furthermore,the Sahu discriminant formula val-ues were both significantly greater than-2.74.The results further demonstrate that the sand layer was formed by a water-laid process rather than by an aeolian process.Our study shows that,in addition to aeolian deposits,water-laid deposits have also been developed and preserved within the sand hill.
