Abstract

The coal industry faces mounting environmental and economic challenges in mining,processing,and utilization,necessitating more advanced and sustainable solutions.Microbial technologies offer promising green alternatives,particularly in coal solubilization,beneficiation,and dust suppression,as compared with traditional thermochemical and leaching processes.Surfactant-assisted strategies have become powerful tools for modeling,simulating,and optimizing coal-microbe interactions,while also playing an increasingly important role in clean coal fuel production,especially in microbial co-processing,conversion,and beneficiation.As amphiphilic molecules,surfactants reduce surface tension and enhance the solubility of hydrophobic compounds.In coal processing and utilization,their versatile functions allow them to directly influence microbial growth,nutrient availability,and substrate utilization,and indirectly act as foaming agents,collectors,and modifiers.This review highlights the biotechnological potential of surfactants by summarizing their roles in coal biodegradation,bioprocessing,and bio-beneficiation,and underscores their importance as enabling technologies for environmentally sustainable coal utilization.
