Abstract

The study examined the effects of fertilization on the growth and nutrient balance of Chinese fir plantations in young and middle-aged stands at the Baisha State Forest Farm in Minhou county,Fujian province,using an L16(44)orthogonal design for the fertilizer experiment.The DRIS method,nutrient critical value method,and range analysis were employed to determine optimal fertilization strategies.Results showed that fertilization significantly increased tree height and diameter growth,compared to the unfertilized control,the young-aged forests achieved optimal growth under treatment 16(N fertilizer 240 g/plant,P fertilizer 480 g/plant,K fertilizer 90 g/plant,Zn fertilizer 9 g/plant),while the middle-aged forests showed best performance with treatment 16(N fertilizer 540 g/plant,P fertilizer 1080 g/plant,K fertilizer 225 g/plant,Zn fertilizer 9 g/plant).Fertilizer effects were more pronounced in young stands than in middle-aged stands and had a greater impact on diameter growth than on tree height across both stand types.Fertilization also improved nutrient balance in leaves,with the nutrient requirement order being K>N>Zn>P for both stand types.The optimal fertilization schemes for nutrient balance were treatment 16(N fertilizer 240 g/plant,P fertilizer 480 g/plant,K fertilizer 90 g/plant,Zn fertilizer 9 g/plant)for young stands and treatment 7(N fertilizer 0 g/plant,P fertilizer 1080 g/plant,K fertilizer 150 g/plant,Zn fertilizer 3 g/plant)for middle-aged stands.Potassium was the dominant factor affecting diameter growth in both stands.The best fertilizer combinations for tree height and diameter growth were N3P3K3Zn1(N fertilizer 240 g/plant,P fertilizer 480 g/plant,K fertilizer 90 g/plant,Zn fertilizer 3 g/plant)and N3P2K3Zn1(N fertilizer 240 g/plant,P fertilizer 320 g/plant,K fertilizer 90 g/plant,Zn fertilizer 3 g/plant)for young stands,and N3P2K1Zn3(N fertilizer 540 g/plant,P fertilizer 720 g/plant,K fertilizer 75 g/plant,Zn fertilizer 9 g/plant)and N3P3K1Zn1(N fertilizer 540 g/plant,P fertilizer 1080 g/plant,K fertilizer 75 g/plant,Zn fertilizer 3 g/plant)for middle-aged stands.In summary,formula fertilization significantly promoted Chinese fir growth.Potassium played a crucial role in improving nutrient balance and diameter growth.Young stands benefited most from high N,P,and K with small amounts of Zn,while middle-aged stands responded best to high N,moderate P,low K,and appropriate Zn.These findings could provide a theoretical basis for precision fertilization in Chinese fir plantations at different growth stages.
