Abstract

To investigate the effects of progressive hybridization between'Australian White'sheep and'Hu'sheep,'Australian White'rams were crossed with'Hu'ewes to produce the F1 and F2 generations,with pure'Hu'Sheep as the control.A total of 30 lambs per group were selected,and their growth performance,slaughter performance,and meat quality were compared from birth to six months of age.The results showed that,at six months of age,the average body mass of male F1 and female F1 lambs was 49.62 kg and 45.18 kg,respectively,while male F2 and female F2 lambs weighed 52.78 kg and 48.78 kg,all significantly higher than those of the'Hu'Sheep group(P<0.01).The average daily gain of both F1 and F2 groups was significantly higher than that of the'Hu'sheep group(P<0.01),with the F2 group exhibiting the fastest growth rate.At six months of age,the chest girth of both F1 and F2 groups was significantly larger than that of the'Hu'sheep group(P<0.01).In terms of slaughter performance,the live mass,carcass mass,net meat mass,net meat per-centage,and meat-to-bone ratio of both F1 and F2 groups were significantly higher than those of the'Hu'sheep group(P<0.01).The slaughter rate and eye muscle area of the F2 group were signifi-cantly higher than those of the'Hu'sheep group(P<0.05).Regarding meat quality,crude protein content in both F1 and F2 groups was significantly higher than that in the'Hu'sheep group(P<0.01),and the F2 group had significantly higher protein content than the F1 group(P<0.05).Addi-tionally,the shear force of the F2 group was significantly lower than that of the F1 group(P<0.01)and the'Hu'sheep group(P<0.05).In conclusion,progressive hybridization between'Australian White'sheep and'Hu'sheep improves the production performance and meat quality of the offspring,with the F2 generation showing the best results.This study provides a scientific basis for the breeding of high-quality meat sheep in China.
