Abstract
The character"尽"does not function as a passive marker in modern Standard Mandarin,but serves as one in certain dialects of Sichuan,Hubei,and Hunan.Using a combined diachronic and synchronic approach,this study draws on field surveys of the Dazhu dialect and classical Chinese corpora such as the CCL.It reveals that the passive meaning of"尽"in the Dazhu dialect derives from the grammaticalization of its causative sense.In"尽"-marked passive sentences,the agent must be explicitly expressed and is typically animate.The verb phrase(VP)often takes a predicate-complement form,tends to carry a detrimental meaning,and frequently co-occurs with"了".Such"尽"-sentences occur in specific contexts to express the speaker's discontent.The negative form is used more frequently,while the affirmative form carries a stronger emphatic tone.关键词
