Materia Medica Going West:Unveiling the Ancient Materia Medica Books of China in the British Library
摘要
Abstract
The British Library preserves a rich collection of materia medica texts, providing essential primary sources for exploring the transmission of traditional Chinese medical knowledge to Europe from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries.Through bibliographical and historical approaches, this study examines the British Library's holdings, which mainly fall into three categories:printed editions, handwritten manuscripts, and illustrated herbal albums. The printed editions are mainly from the Qing Dynasty, including rare or even unique versions not found in Chinese collections. The handwritten manuscripts encompass both Dunhuang scrolls and Japanese copies produced by physicians of the Edo period. The illustrated albums are presumed to be export paintings created by Chinese artists for overseas circulation. In addition, the library also holds index booklets compiled by European scholars, designed to assist in locating and understanding medicinal information within the Chinese texts.Together, these materials reveal the cross-cultural transmission and reception of Chinese medical knowledge worldwide, and reflect Europe's enduring focus and intellectual interest in East Asian medicine, science, and natural history.关键词
