Examining the Production of Medical Series Books in the Late Ming Dynasty through Lu Fu's Yi Zhong Zi:Discussion on the Reprinting of Medical Books from the Same Printing Plates

Abstract
Yi Zhong Zi(《医种子》Medical Seeds)compiled by Lu Fu(卢复),a physician from Qiantang(钱塘),is a representative work of"reprinting with the same block"within the series books publication industry in Wulin region(武林地区)in the late Ming Dynasty.Initially compiled in the 48th year of the Wanli reign(1620),this series integrated 12 medical books that Lu Fu had successively published from the 44th year of the Wanli reign(1616)to the 48th year of the Wanli reign.These books were classified into four categories:"Yi Jing Zhong Zi(医经种子 Medical Classic Seeds)","Yi Lun Zhong Zi(医论种子 Medical Theory Seeds)","Yi Fang Zhong Zi(医方种子 Medical Formula Seeds)"and"Yi An Zhong Zi(医按种子 Medical Case Seeds)",with three books of Zhi Yuan Yi Cao(《芷园臆草》Zhiyuan's Random Medical Notes)attached as supplements.In the early Tianqi reign,to avoid taboos related to the personal name of Zhu Youjiao(朱由校),Emperor Xizong of the Ming Dynasty,the series was revised,supplemented and renamed Zhi Yuan Yi Zhong(《芷园医种》Zhiyuan's Medical Seeds).The supplementary content included the newly engraved Kan Fang(《勘方》Textual Research and Discussion on Formulas)and Cun An(《存案》Records of Preserved Personal Medical Cases).Meanwhile,textual details such as the titles at the beginning of volumes,prefaces and postscripts,and the center of book pages were altered by block-cutting,forming a"supplemented reprinted version"of the original engraved edition.The compilation,revision and reprinting of Yi Zhong Zi not only reflect Lu Fu's concept of integrating Buddhism with the academic proposition of"respecting classics and reviving antiquity",but also embody the production mode of reprinting medical series with the same block in the late Ming Dynasty.It provides an important example for the study of publishing culture and the dissemination of medical books in the Ming Dynasty.关键词
