The Uses of Images as Historical Evidence:The Evolution and Characteristics of the Attire of Ancient Physicians after the Song Dynasty
摘要
Abstract
The attire of medical practitioners serves not only as the material basis of their image but also as a symbol of their identity and an embodiment of their spirit in social activities by exploring the attire of medical practitioners after the Song Dynasty. The sartorial image of medical practitioners encapsulates the values refined from the rich historical practices of medicine, carrying profound cultural connotations.Based on historical visuals that intuitively depict the attire of ancient medical practitioners, this study combines documentary materials to reconstruct the specific details of their clothing and analyze the historical reasons behind different representations. The study finds that the attire of ancient medical practitioners did not develop a unified, professional identification system,as different groups of practitioners from varying backgrounds had distinct sartorial expressions. However, their historical evolution exhibits certain commonalities and characteristics:namely,"those unqualified are not entitled to wear the attire",the"symbolization"of medical practitioners'accessories, and the tendency toward"Confucian scholar-style"attire among medical practitioners. An in-depth exploration of the sartorial image of ancient medical practitioners contributes to understanding the cultural connotations it carries, holding significant academic value and practical for deepening the cognition of Traditional Chinese Medicine culture and promoting its inheritance and development.关键词
