Abstract

The ovoviviparous marbled rockfish(Sebastiscus marmoratus)is a species of considerable commercial and ecological importance with high potential for mariculture.However,the relationship between growth and gonadal development of S.marmoratus under stable culture conditions remains to be illustrated.To address this gap,a continuous sampling of the juvenile and adult marbled rockfish was conducted.The length-weight relationship of S.marmoratus was estimated,and seasonal changes in the gonadosomatic index(GSI)and hepatosomatic index(HSI)were analyzed across nearly three reproductive cycles by measuring biological indicators,including body length,body weight,gonadal weight,and liver weight at different developmental stages.In addition,anatomical and histological examinations of the reproductive systems of the female and male marbled rockfish were carried out to characterize the full cycle of gonadal development and to investigate the morphological basis underlying their ovoviviparous reproductive strategy. The results revealed that female marbled rockfish exhibit allometric growth,whereas males displayed isometric growth.Gonadal development was strongly correlated with body length and body weight.Males that spawned in spring reached sexual maturity by the autumn of their second year,whereas females require more than two reproductive cycles to achieve full sexual maturity.Clear seasonal variation in gonadal development was observed,with testes maturing 1-2 months earlier(in October and November)than ovaries.Following sexual maturation,copulation occurred,and sperm were stored within the female ovary.Vitellogenesis was not initiated until mating was completed.The breeding season lasted from November to April,during which female GSI significantly increased,and females released offspring in multiple batches.Furthermore,the ovaries of pregnant S.marmoratus were highly vascularized,and both the developing embryos and vitellogenic oocytes were present within the same ovary.Ovarian fluid volume increased during late embryonic development,and yolk components were observed in the primitive gut of embryos at the eye-formation stage,suggesting maternal nutrient provision during embryonic development. In conclusion,this study provides a comprehensive characterization of the growth pattern and gonadal development of marbled rockfish under captive conditions,offering new insights into the mechanisms of ovoviviparity and establishing a basis for the development of controlled breeding techniques.
