Comparison of morphological traits and path analysis on body weight of three populations of Procambarus clarkii

Abstract
The red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii is an economically important shrimp species in China.However,current challenges,including reduced body size,disproportionately large carapace and chelae,and relatively small abdomen,result in low meat yield,thereby restricting the sustainable development of the industry.Therefore,breeding new strains of P.clarkii with larger body size,smaller chelae,and enlarged abdomen is of considerable importance.In this study,we conducted a comparative analysis of the morphological characteristic differences among three P.clarkii populations from Xuancheng(Anhui),Gaoyou(Jiangsu),and Chongming(Shanghai),examining their relationships with body weight.The conducted analyses included one-way ANOVA,coefficient of variation testing,principal component analysis,cluster analysis,discriminant analysis,correlation analysis,regression analysis,and path analysis.One-way ANOVA and coefficient of variation tests revealed that the Xuancheng population exhibited a relatively shorter carapace length,while the morphological differences among the three P.clarkii populations were insufficient to constitute subspecies-level divergence.Principal component analysis revealed that body width traits(carapace width and first abdominal segment width),carapace length trait,abdominal segment length trait,and chela length trait contributed significantly to the morphological differentiation among the populations.Cluster analysis revealed that the Euclidean distance between the Chongming and Gaoyou populations was the smallest,indicating the closest genetic relationship.Discriminant analysis identified body weight,carapace width,carapace height,and cheliped length as the primary contributors to classification accuracy,achieving a rate exceeding 90%for the Xuancheng population.Path analysis further demonstrated that total length,body length,chela length,and chela width are key factors influencing body weight.Overall,a certain degree of morphological differentiation has developed among the three P.clarkii populations,supporting their suitability as base groups for breeding.The results highlight total length,body length,chela length,and chela width as critical morphological traits affecting body weight.This study provides data-driven evidence to inform the selection of foundational breeding populations of P.clarkii with desirable traits,namely,large body size,smaller chelipeds,and enlarged abdominal segments.关键词
