Abstract

To understand the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of fish resources,hydroacoustic and catch surveys were conducted in the Jiangjin,Zhongxian,and Zigui sections of the upper Yangtze River during the initial period of the fishing ban from May to December 2023.The results demonstrated that,temporal distribution of the fish densities in the Jiangjin section during low-water and high-water periods were(9.17±2.28)and(13.32±2.44)individuals(ind.)/1000 m³,respectively,with average target strengths of(-55.69±3.38)and(-55.21±3.13)dB.In the Zhongxian section,the fish densities during low-water and high-water periods were(6.38±1.27)and(1.22±0.26)ind./1000 m³,respectively,with average target strengths of(-53.99±4.25)and(-56.66±3.23)dB.In the Zigui section,the fish densities during low-water and high-water periods were(0.45±0.19)and(0.32±0.07)ind./1000 m³,respectively,with average target strengths of(-52.18±5.90)and(-52.08±4.42)dB.The fish density was unevenly distribted horizontally,with concentrations in river bends and confluences.Vertically,in the Jiangjin section,fish densities during the two periods were ranked as middle layer>surface layer>bottom layer and surface layer>middle layer>bottom layer.In the Zhongxian section,fish densities during the two periods were ranked as surface layer>middle layer>bottom layer and surface layer>bottom layer>middle layer.In the Zigui section,fish densities during both periods were ranked as surface layer>middle layer>bottom layer.The fish densities in the Jiangjin,Zhongxian,and Zigui sections showed highly significant differences between the two periods(P<0.01).Catch surveys indicated that the river sections were dominated by lentic fish species,with the Cyprinidae family being predominant.The study provides data support for assessing the recovery and conservation of fish resources in the upper Yangtze River following the implementation of the fishing ban policy.
