Research Advances in Enhancing Anaerobic Digestion Performance Using Exogenous Electric Field

Abstract
Biomethane,as a clean and low-carbon renewable energy source,holds significant potential to alleviate the glob-al energy crisis and reduce carbon emissions.Anaerobic digestion(AD)is the primary method for producing biomethane.However,low efficiency in interspecies hydrogen transfer readily leads to acidification in AD,thereby suppressing methane production.Exogenous electric field is a novel approach to stimulating interspecies electron transfer between syntrophic mi-croorganisms.This study introduces the enhancement mechanism of exogenous electric fields,which primarily enrich elec-troactive microorganisms on electrode surface and promote extracellular electron transfer.The influence of factors such as voltage level,electrode material,reactor structure,and power supply mode on electric field-stimulated AD reactors(elec-tro-fermentation reactors)was analyzed.Additionally,research advance of exogenous electric fields to enhance the digestion of complex feedstocks and alleviate inhibition caused by ammonia nitrogen and acids in AD are discussed.Finally,future research directions are proposed,focusing on the development of efficient electrode materials,the mechanisms of interspe-cies electron transfer via exogenous electric fields,and the application of electro-fermentation reactors.关键词
