Microplastics exposure causes neurobehavioral toxic effects in zebrafish

Abstract
A Meta-analysis was conducted based on 40 peer-reviewed papers to investigate the effects of microplastic exposure on the neurotoxicity and locomotor behavior of zebrafish.The results showed that acetylcholine levels in zebrafish were significantly increased by 87.6%due to microplastics,and acetylcholinesterase activity as well as its gene expression were significantly inhibited(downregulated by 46.0%).Under conditions of long-term high-concentration exposure,the inhibitory effect of spherical microplastics with small particle sizes was the most significant.Sleep behavior of zebrafish was reduced by 32.1%and shoaling behavior was increased by 21.5%due to microplastics.The mechanism might be that locomotor behavior was regulated by interfering with neurotransmitter function and affecting neural conduction.Due to the limited sample size,the relevant molecular mechanisms have not been thoroughly explored.Further verification through experiments will be required in the future.A theoretical framework and scientific insights were provided by this study for the mechanism research on microplastic-induced neurobehavioral toxicity in zebrafish.关键词
