Understory Vegetation Diversity in Chinese Fir Plantations across Stand Ages and Regions

Abstract
[Objective]Understanding the variations in understory vegetation species composition and di-versity from the perspectives of stand age,region,and their interactions is critical for optimizing the man-agement of plantation forests.[Method]This study examined Cunninghamia lanceolata(Lamb.)Hook.plantations in Liuyang City,Hunan Province(mid-subtropical zone)and Huzhao Mountain,Hubei Province(north-subtropical zone).Four stand ages(young,middle-aged,mature,and overmature forests)were se-lected to investigate understory vegetation diversity and biomass.Permutation-based multivariate analysis of variance(Adonis)and generalized additive models(GAMs)were employed to analyze the relationships between understory vegetation diversity and biomass.[Results]With increasing stand age,the herb-aceous layer in C.lanceolata plantations shifted from light-demanding species to shade-tolerant species,while the shrub layer exhibited an opposite trend,transitioning from shade-tolerant to light-demanding spe-cies.The north-subtropical environment facilitated the coexistence of light-demanding shrubs and shade-tolerant herbs,whereas the mid-subtropical environment favored shade-tolerant shrubs and light-demand-ing herbs.Shrub layer diversity and biomass peaked in mature stands,suggesting that appropriately ex-tending the rotation period of C.lanceolata plantations could enhance understory vegetation recovery.The Margalef richness index was significantly affected by the interaction between region and stand age.In Huzhao Mountain,increasing stand age intensified water competition,suppressing shrub and herb di-versity,while the high-humidity environment in Liuyang buffered light limitations,with bidirectional effects offsetting the main regional influences.Additionally,rapid sprouting or root resource monopolization by dominant understory species led to a negative correlation between diversity and biomass.[Conclusion]Prolonging rotation periods and selecting regions with suitable hydrothermal conditions can promote un-derstory vegetation diversity in C.lanceolata plantations,thereby improving soil fertility and supporting sus-tainable forest management.关键词
