Effects of cold atmospheric plasma on the dentin-resin bond strength and stability

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the effects of cold atmospheric plasma(CAP)generated by pure helium(He)and helium/oxygen(He/O2)mixtures at different treatment durations on the dentin-resin bond strength and interfacial stabili-ty.Methods:Forty-five extracted human third molars were randomly divided into nine groups(n=5):one control group(no treatment)and eight experimental groups treated with He-CAP or He/O2-CAP for 10 s,20 s,30 s,or 60 s.After plasma treat-ment,a universal adhesive and resin composite were applied.Microtensile bond strength(μTBS)was tested after 24 h,and failure modes were analyzed.Nanoleakage evaluation was performed to assess interfacial stability.Results:All CAP-treated groups showed significantly higher μTBS values than the control group(29.18±3.33)MPa(P<0.05),and bond strength in-creased with longer treatment times.The He/O2-60 s group exhibited the highest bond strength(49.20±5.70)MPa.At the same treatment duration,He/O2-CAP produced significantly higher μTBS values than He-CAP(P<0.05).Failure mode analysis revealed fewer adhesive failures and more cohesive failures in CAP-treated groups,particularly in the He/O2-30 s and He/O2-60 s groups.Nanoleakage observations showed less silver deposition in CAP-treated groups compared with the control,with slightly reduced leakage in the He/O2 groups relative to the He groups.Conclusion:Cold atmospheric plasma treatment,especially He/O2-CAP for 60 s,effectively enhances the immediate dentin-resin bond strength,improves failure patterns,reduces nanoleakage,and strengthens interfacial stability.These findings suggest promising potential for CAP appli-cation in adhesive dentistry.关键词
