Abstract

[Objective]This study aimed to investigate the contribution of single gene or combined dwarfing genes dw1,dw2 and dw3 to reducing sorghum plant height.[Methods]Molecular markers were developed based on known variation sites in the Dw1,Dw2 and Dw3 alleles.Plant heights and Dw alleles were analyzed in 14 sorghum accessions and F2 population derived from a cross between 8R252(Dw1Dw2Dw3)and 8R387(dw1dw2dw3)to assess the influence of the three dwarfing genes and their allelic combinations on plant heights.[Results]Practical molecular markers were developed based on mutations,insertions,and deletions in the coding regions of the Dw1,Dw2 and Dw3 genes.In the natural sorghum population,plant-height varied sig-nificantly even when the Dw1,Dw2 and Dw3 alleles were identical.However,the plant heights gradually decreased with the ac-cumulation of more dwarfing alleles.Analysis of the F2 population,which contained eight different allelic combinations,re-vealed the following patterns:when one gene was mutated,the reduction in plant height followed the order Dw1Dw2dw3>dw1Dw2Dw3>Dw1dw2Dw3;When two gene were mutated,the reduction followed dw1Dw2dw3>Dw1dw2dw3>dw1dw2Dw3;and when all three genes were mutated,plant height was the shortest.[Conclusion]The three cloned dwarfing genes in sorghum contribute differently to plant height reduction,with the magnitude of reduction following the order of dw3>dw1>dw2.
