Abstract

A hygrothermal environment risk evaluation method for the conservation of wall paintings,which was used to evaluate the environment risk of four test caves at Mogao Grottoes,has been proposed based on EN 15757 in this study.The results show that the degree of short-term temperature fluctuation in caves is positive to opening intensity of caves.The short-term temperature fluctuation of closed caves in 2023 is lower than 2℃,while that in open caves vary significantly from the opening frequency of caves.Correspondingly,the thermal environment risk in closed caves throughout the year is low,and that in open caves is mainly concentrated in peak season.However,the short-term fluctuation of relative humidity in caves behaves differently from that of temperature,and it is greatly sensitive to precipitation events.Both the maximum short-term fluctuation of relative humidity and the highest risk of humid environment in closed caves occur in rainy season.Compared to closed caves,open caves have large short-term fluctuation of relative humidity and high humid environment risk not only in rainy season but also in tourist season.The risk assessment framework proposed in this study provides a universal method for understanding and quantifying the dynamic hygrothermal environment risk in grotto temples,and holds significant reference value for the preventive conservation of similar cultural heritage sites.
