Abstract

As important cultural heritage sites,earthen ruins are subject to sheet-like spalling in their shallow layers due to freeze-thaw cycles and other factors,posing a serious threat to long-term preservation.This study investigates the macro-and micro-level characteristics of flaking damage in the Shidonggouliang Great Wall under freeze-thaw conditions in high-altitude,semi-arid regions.Based on the collection of environmental data from the Shidonggouliang Great Wall area,field surveys were conducted to measure flaking conditions,wave velocity values,and temperature parameters in various sections of the flaking areas.Subsequently,microscopic tests such as particle analysis,XRD,and soluble salt content were carried out to further understand the microscopic characteristics of the flaking damage.Based on the macro-and microscopic parameter characteristics,the layering phenomenon during the formation of flaking damage in soil sites induced by freeze-thaw cycles was analyzed.The results indicate that the macro-and microscopic characterization methods used can effectively reflect the characteristics of flaking damage.Freeze-thaw cycles in high-altitude semi-arid environments cause significant macro-and micro-level damage to soil sites,with distinct differences between the crust layer and the powdery layer.The crust layer is dense and resistant to erosion but prone to thermal stress cracking,while the powdery layer is loose,rich in salts,and prone to disintegration.This dual-structure characteristic is the core feature of flaking damage.This study provides important evidence for understanding the formation process of flaking damage and offers a theoretical basis for the protection of soil sites.
