Literary Mapping,Natural History Narratives and Imperial Politics in The Lost World
摘要
Abstract
The connection between natural history narratives and literary mapping was a core topic in the discussions of European adventure stories in the 19th and 20th centuries.Conan Doyle created the image of four explorers led by Professor Challenger in The Lost World, and focused on depicting their power representation in heterogeneous spaces during the process of collecting prehistoric creatures on the Amazon Plateau.Firstly,Doyle represented the Amazon region as a"blank","uncharted"and"little-known"heterogeneous space through the literary mapping method, and then achieved symbolic imperial power control and possession of the Amazon region through the collection, classification, and naming of natural history.By using both the two-and three-dimensional representation methods of illustration and natural history,Conan Doyle not only alleviated the cultural discomfort and representation difficulties brought by the exoticism of South America, but also displayed the scientific authority and cultural hegemonic consciousness of Eurocentrism.关键词
