Changes in Sap Flow and Its Response to Meteorological Factors during the Flowering and Boll Setting Stage of Drip Irrigation Cotton

Abstract
The flowering and boll setting stage is a critical period for water demand in cotton cultivation,as water deficit significantly impacts yield.Understanding sap flow variation characteristics during this stage in cotton grown in northern Xinjiang is essential for revealing transpiration and water consumption patterns and optimizing field water management.In this study,cotton sap flow velocity during the flowering and boll setting stage under conventional cultivation mode in the oasis of northern Xinjiang was continuously monitored by using stem flow meters.Methods such as the Pearson correlation coefficient are employed to investigate transpiration rates and water consumption of cotton under drip irrigation and their relationships with meteorological factors.The results indicate that under various typical weather conditions,sap flow velocity ranked from highest to lowest as follows:sunny>cloudy>rainy.Additionally,sap velocity exhibited a significant diurnal rhythm,showing a positively correlation with wind speed,temperature,total radiation irradiance,and saturated vapor pressure deficit,and a negative correlation with relative humidity.Notably,there was a time lag between changes in sap flow velocity and meteorological factors.The peak sap flow velocity occurred slightly before or after peak temperature.Furthermore,the decline in sap flow velocity lagged behind total radiation decline by approximately 1.0-1.5 hours,while reaching its peak 1.0-2.0 hours earlier than the maximum value of saturated vapor pressure dificit.During the flowering and boll-setting stage,the daily transpiration rates of cotton ranged from 2.2 to 6.6 mm·d-1 across different years,exhibiting significant interannual variability.Considering the mechanisms by which meteorological factors influence sap flow,it is recommended to incorporate transpiration patterns and sap flow characteristics into irrigation strategies to improve water use efficiency.关键词
