Impaired Recognition of Fearful Expression in Male Abstinent Drug Addicts:Evidence from Single-Target and Dual-Target Rapid Serial Visual Presentation Tasks

Abstract
Objective:To explore the impairments in the recognition of fearful facial expressions within the temporal do-main among male abstinent drug users.Methods:We recruited 25 male abstinent drug users and 24 healthy male con-trols.With both single-target and dual-target Rapid Serial Visual Presentation(RSVP)tasks,participants were required to identify fearful or neutral facial expressions that followed scene images.Results:Fearful faces were detected more accu-rately than neutral faces,indicating that both drug addicts and healthy controls exhibited similar detection advantages for fearful expressions.However,abstinent drug users showed significantly lower discrimination accuracy for fearful faces rela-tive to neutral faces under both lag3 and lag8 conditions in both the single-target and dual-target tasks.In contrast,for healthy controls,discrimination accuracy for fearful faces was lower than that for neutral faces at lag3 rather than at lag8 in the single-target task,but was lower at lag8 rather than at lag3 in the dual-target task.Conclusion:While the detection ad-vantage for fearful expressions remained intact in male abstinent drug addicts,their ability to discriminate fearful facial ex-pressions was impaired.关键词
