Abstract

Birnessite-type manganese dioxide(Bir-MnO2)was synthesized via a hydrothermal method,and acid-modified birnessite(H-Bir)was obtained through the acid treatment of Bir-MnO2.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),X-ray diffraction(XRD),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)were employed to characterize the surface morphology,crystal structure,and chemical composition of the catalyst.These characterization results elucidated the catalyst's mechanism of action in catalytic ozonation.Compared with Bir-MnO2 H-Bir exhibited a lower average oxidation state(AOS)of manganese.Additionally,during the catalytic ozonation process,a redox cycle involving manganese ions in three valence states was formed.Oxygen vacancies(Vo),surface hydroxyl groups,and metal redox couples were identified as the main active sites of the catalyst.Experiments on oxalic acid degradation in different systems demonstrated that H-Bir possessed excellent catalytic performance.
