Abstract

[Objective]This study aims to analyze the impact of interdecadal variation of the summer Arctic Oscillation(AO)on the temperature in the East Asian region and its influencing mechanisms,providing an important reference for regional climate prediction.[Method]Using observational and reanalysis data,the impacts of AO and AO-related geopotential height,wind field,and wave activity flux on the summer temperature in East Asia before and after the mid-1980s were analyzed.[Results and Conclusion]After the mid-1980s,the lower activity center of the summer AO over the Atlantic shifted eastward.This change in the summer AO had a significant impact on the East Asian temperature.Prior to the mid-1980s,the key regions in East Asia affected by AO were the northern East Asia,the Yangtze River basin,and the northwestern region of China.After the mid-1980s,the key regions in East Asia affected by AO were the northwestern region of China and the northern South China Sea(SCS)and its adjacent areas.The mechanism of temperature changes could be attributed to the interdecadal change of eastward shift of the lower-level activity center latitudinal position of summer AO over the Atlantic.After the mid-1980s,the influence of AO on the geopotential height in the northern East Asia weakened;while the influence of AO on the geopotential height in China strengthened.Consistent with the changes in geopotential height,the atmospheric circulation in East Asia also underwent interdecadal changes around the mid-1980s.The differences in atmospheric circulation in East Asia could be traced back to the North Atlantic.Before the mid-1980s,the wave activity flux related to summer AO in North Atlantic was strong and propagated eastward in two pathways.One propagated in high latitudes to the northern East Asia,and the other propagated in subtropics to China.This resulted in warming in the northern East Asia and the Yangtze River Basin,along with cooling in northwestern China during positive AO phases;the opposite pattern occurred during negative AO phases.After the mid-1980s,the wave activity flux related to summer AO in North Atlantic weakened and propagated eastward through the subtropics and across the Middle East to China,with significant changes occurring along this path,which had a notable impact on China's summer temperatures..This led to warming in northwestern China and cooling in the northern South China Sea during positive AO phases;the opposite was observed during negative AO phases.
