Abstract

Based on field monitoring data from 53 Category A and B rivers in the Hanjiang River and Eastern Guangdong river systems in 2024,an assessment framework was established following the Technical Guidelines for River and Lake Health Assessment in Guangdong Province(2023 Revision).Key indicators,including water quality status,ecological flow satisfaction degree,fish retention index,phytoplankton density,and benthic macroinvertebrate index of biological integrity,were selected to systematically evaluate the aquatic ecological health of the basin.The results show that the"Water"criterion layer of the basin is generally in a healthy state(average score:86.12).However,pollution in certain river sections is prominent,with nine rivers exhibiting water quality status scores below 60,indicating an unhealthy state.The"Biology"criterion layer had an average score of 73.06,indicating a sub-healthy state,with 13 rivers scoring below 60,demonstrating significant degradation of biological integrity.Spatially,a distribution pattern of"upstream better than downstream,tributaries better than mainstem"was observed.Based on the coupling relationship between water quality and biological indicators,three types of degraded river sections were identified:water quality-stress type,hydrological-barrier type,and biological-invasion type.Differentiated restoration strategies focusing on pollution source control,ecological water replenishment,sluice and dam modification,and invasive species prevention are proposed,providing a scientific basis for the precise and zonal management of the aquatic ecosystem in the Hanjiang River and Eastern Guangdong river systems.
