Abstract

To synthesize the multifunctional adsorbents for simultaneous removal of organic pollutants and heavy metal ions is of great importance in textile wastewater treatment.To achieve the simultaneous ad-sorption of benzenes and Hg(II),a new type of magnetic thiol-covalent organic polymer(Fe3O4@COP-S-SH)was synthesized as a multifunctional adsorbent.The introduction of large-area conjugated 1,3,6,8-tet-raphenylpyrene moiety provided strong π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions for binding benzenes,and meanwhile the modification with-S(CH2)2SH groups supplied strong binding sites for adsorbing Hg(II).Moreover,its magnetic core enabled fast separation of adsorbent from solution by a magnetic field.Results showed that the new adsorbent exhibited good thermodynamic adsorption ability for toluene,m-xy-lene,and Hg(II)with maximum adsorption capacities of 769.2mg/g,469.5mg/g and 431.5 mg/g respective-ly,which are higher than those of most existing magnetic adsorbents.Furthermore,this new adsorbent dis-played fast binding kinetics for three pollutants.In addition,Fe3O4@COP-S-SH achieved simultaneous high adsorption efficiencies for three pollutants in water at different concentrations with adsorption effi-ciencies(93.2%to98.5%,97.6%to 99.5%and 94.1%to 99.0%respectively),and it also performed satis-factory binding performance for three pollutants in a simulated wastewater with adsorption efficiencies of 91.1%,96.4%and 87.0%correspondingly.Notably,this adsorbent possessed good reusability(at least five cycles).The multifunctional adsorbent synthesized in this work displays obvious advantages over the existing magnetic ones,which can only remove benzenes or Hg(II)separately,therefore it can be potential-ly utilized as excellent material for the efficient simultaneous removal of benzenes and Hg(II)with high ca-pacity in real wastewater.The design and synthesis of this new material also provides a novel strategy for preparing magnetic multifunctional adsorbents.
