Effect of Chemical Pretreatment on the High-consistency Refining and Dissociation Behavior of Cunninghamia lanceolata(Lamb.)Hook

Abstract
Three chemical pretreatment methods—alkaline sulfite(AS),sulfite(S),and alkaline peroxide(AP)—were applied to Cunninghamia lanceolata,and their effects on refining dissociation behavior were evaluated through refining energy consumption,pulp physical properties,fiber size,and morphology.Results showed that,in terms of tensile index,the AP process was the most energy-efficient,achieving energy savings of 38.4%,18.5%,and10.7%compared to refiner mechanical pulp(RMP),AS,and S processes,respectively,at a tensile index of 10 N·m/g.The S process resulted in pulp with higher bulk,while the AP process offered both energy efficiency and enhanced pulp strength:at 305 mL Canadian standard freeness(CSF),tensile,burst,and tear indices reached 12.56 N·m/g,0.61 kPa·m2/g,and 2.48 mN·m2/g,representing increases of 120%,110%,and 70%over the RMP process.Microstructural analysis of fiber cell walls during refining suggested two dissociation pathways:sulfite pretreatment caused separation mainly in the compound middle lamella(CML),requiring CML breakdown before fibrillation,whereas alkaline peroxide induced separation within the secondary wall(mainly the S2 layer),facilitating internal and external fibrillation and improving fiber bonding.This difference in separation location may explain the energy savings and strength improvements observed with alkaline peroxide pretreatment.关键词
