Abstract

The feasibility of underground water-sealed rock cavern storage is determined by two critical factors:water-sealing performance and surrounding rock stability.This study focuses on the stability of surrounding rock to analyze the feasibility of constructing storage caverns in sandstone areas,and summarizes the structural design techniques for underground engineering in such geological conditions.Through numerical simulations,the influences of different cross-sectional geometries and cavern spacing on the storage system are investigated,along with an analysis of surrounding rock stability based on failure mechanisms and block stability.The numerical results reveals that:the superposition effect between adjacent caverns significantly diminishes with increasing spacing;in areas with significant stress release and poor free-face conditions,structural deformation and the resulting block instability constitute the most prevalent and critical safety risks.These findings provide crucial theoretical parameters for optimizing site selection and implementing differentiated support designs in sandstone-area underground storage projects,effectively bridging the technical gap in water-sealed cavern construction within non-traditional rock mass formations.
