An exploration of the regional characteristics of folk traditional Chinese medicine among the Hakka people in Fujian

Abstract
Folk traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)among the Hakka people in Fujian boasts a long history and rich practical experience,representing a profound integration of Hakka culture and classical TCM theory.Through documentary research and field investigations,this study systematically examines its historical origins,theoretical foundations,medicinal usage characteristics,modern value,and pathways for inheritance.The findings reveal that Hakka folk medicine originated during the southward migration of the Hakka people,blending Central Plains medical traditions with the ethnomedical knowledge of local ethnic groups such as the She and Yao.Leveraging the Wuyi Mountains—known as a"natural herbal trea-sure"—this medical system is guided by the philosophical concept of"harmony between humanity and nature"and classical texts like Huangdi's Internal Classic.Combined with cultural values of"family-based transmission"and"worship for na-ture,"it has evolved into a distinctive medicinal framework characterized by"rootedness in classical tradition and inclusive integration."In clinical practice,Hakka folk medicine employs a diverse range of substances—including plant,animal,and mineral-based remedies—primarily targeting common conditions such as external contraction,spleen-stomach disorders,wind-damp arthralgia,and snakebites.Herbal formulas adhere to the classical"sovereign-minister,assistant-guide"prin-ciple,often combining cold and hot properties and balancing purgative and tonic strategies.The forms of medication are flex-ible and diverse,and dosages are determined empirically.Preparation methods follow time-honored processing techniques,and Hakka rice wine is innovatively used to enhance therapeutic efficacy.The strong emphasis on"food-medicine homol-ogy"offers valuable insights for developing health-promoting products and integrating TCM into wellness tourism.However,the inheritance of this heritage faces significant challenges,including a shortage of skilled practitioners,insufficient scien-tific validation,and declining medicinal resources.Addressing these issues requires great efforts in scientific research,train-ing of inheritors,and industrial exploration to promote standardization and modernization,thereby supporting the innovative preservation and diversified development of traditional Chinese medicine culture.关键词
