The structures,functions,and biosynthetic pathways of natural products synthesized with arginine involvement

Abstract
Arginine is extensively involved in the biosynthesis of natural products,serving as a source of key structural units for numerous bioactive molecules.This contribution has facilitated the generation of a variety of structurally diverse compounds with significant biological importance,including polyketides,non-ribosomal peptides,ribosomal peptides,β-lactams,and aminoglycosides.A unifying feature of these compounds is the presence of arginine-derived guanidino or amino groups in their structures,which are crucial to the molecules'bioactivity.In biosynthesis,arginine can be incorporated into products through various mechanisms:modification into 4-guanidinobutyrate as a starter unit for polyketide synthesis;incorporation as an amino acid substrate into non-ribosomal peptide chains;enzymatic modification during the post-translational modifications of peptides;and participation in specialized cyclization steps(such as β-lactam ring formation).These arginine-derived natural products exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial and antifungal activities,highlighting their substantial value for the development of anti-infective drugs.This review systematically summarizes the types,structural characteristics,biosynthetic mechanisms,and biological activities of natural products synthesized with arginine involvement,providing a theoretical foundation for the development of novel drugs.关键词
