Shaping Patriotic"New Citizens":The Propaganda Practices of Patriotism in the People's Education in Northern Anhui

Abstract
During the 1920s and 1930s,amidst the urgent quest for national salvation and survival,modern Chinese newspapers forged a unique press culture by integrating patriotic propaganda with the social mission of mass educa-tion to achieve the goal of"awakening the public".Centering on the People's Education in Northern Anhui,pub-lished by the Third Anhui Provincial Public Education Hall,this study examines how print media facilitated patriotic ideological dissemination during the mass awakening process.Specifically,the Third Anhui Provincial Public Educa-tion Hall leveraged the People's Education in Northern Anhui as a communicative platform to infuse patriotic ideas into diverse propaganda contents—including cognitive reform,literacy education,and vocational guidance—through one-way dissemination,two-way dialogue,and multi-stakeholder interaction.This strategy aimed to cultivate"new citizens"capable of loving,rescuing,and building the nation.This analytical lens deepens multidimensional under-standing of patriotic ideological enlightenment in modern northern Anhui and demonstrates the distinctive agency of newspapers within the nationalist salvation movement.关键词
