Abstract

Southwest China is an important grain-producing region,due to its complex climatic and ecological conditions,Southwest China has formed a distinctive multi-cropping farming system.This study aims to fully understand the basic situation of the agricultural region in Southwest China and the existing farming system,and accelerate the establishment of a modern and novel farming system.Documentary research and inductive analysis are employed to examine the regional division of farming systems,typical farming models,and limiting factors for agricultural development based on long-term experimental demonstrations and practical production examples from relevant research institutions,and prospects for future development are explored.The findings indicate that:1)Southwest China can be divided into four agricultural zones:Hilly of basin agricultural region,plateau agricultural region,Karst mountainous agricultural region,and plain of basin agricultural region.Each zone has a distinct natural and ecological condition to shape its unique farming system;2)Six types of multi-cropping systems form the backbone of the region's farming practices including paddy-upland rotation in rice fields,single-planting with multiple harvests in rice fields,strip intercropping in drylands,relay oil-grain rotation in drylands,crop-livestock recycling systems,and year-round multiple cropping in vegetable fields;3)Key constraints on agricultural development include intense competition for land among crops,regional developmental disparities,and low mechanization levels in hilly and mountainous areas.In summary,the current farming systems in Southwest China are constrained by low levels of resource-use efficiency,weak resilience against extreme climate events,and insufficient industrial integration.Moving forward,farming-system design must be tailored to the region's resource endowments and national priorities for food security and sustainable agriculture,accelerating the establishment of a modern,resource-efficient,eco-friendly,intensive,and industrially synergistic farming system.
