Impact of intelligent manufacturing on corporate ESG performance:a quasi-natural experiment based on the intelligent manufacturing pilot demonstration project

Abstract
In the era of the digital and intelligent economy,intelligent manufacturing plays an increasingly vital role in advancing mod-ern industrial systems and fostering new drivers for development.Understanding the intrinsic relationship between intelligent manufac-turing and corporate ESG(environmental,social,and governance)performance is of considerable practical significance for cultivating green new quality productive forces and promoting corporate sustainable development.Based on ESG rating data published by Sino-Se-curities Index Information Service(Shanghai)Co.Ltd.and financial data from A-share listed companies on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges from 2010 to 2022,this study used a multi-period difference-in-differences(DID)model to quantitatively assess the im-pact of intelligent manufacturing on corporate ESG performance and its underlying mechanisms.The findings indicated that:① Intelli-gent manufacturing significantly improved corporate ESG performance.This conclusion remained robust after addressing endogeneity,conducting parallel trend tests,altering ESG performance measurement methods,and implementing placebo tests.② Mechanism analy-sis suggested that intelligent manufacturing optimized internal governance through internal control and green innovation while also facil-itating external resource integration through improved information transparency and financing capabilities,ultimately boosting corporate ESG performance.③ Heterogeneity analysis showed that the positive impact of intelligent manufacturing on corporate ESG perfor-mance was more pronounced in heavily polluting industries,non-state-owned enterprises,and firms located in regions with high public environmental awareness and advanced digital infrastructure.④ A composite index of ESG uncertainty was constructed from ratings is-sued by five major ESG agencies.This study further confirmed that intelligent manufacturing significantly reduced ESG performance uncertainty.Moreover,the impact of intelligent manufacturing on corporate ESG performance exhibited significant supply chain spill-over effects,which synergistically enhanced the ESG performance of both upstream suppliers and downstream customers in the supply chain.Overall,this study highlights the critical role of intelligent manufacturing in promoting corporate sustainable development,en-riches research literature on ESG performance,and offers important policy insights for facilitating the responsible and intelligent trans-formation of the manufacturing sector and advancing high-quality corporate development.关键词
