Abstract

Objective To study the correlation between thresholds of electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses(EABRs)and behavioral audiometry(T-values)in Chinese-made cochlear implants users,as related to the feasibility of objectively setting T-values through EABR testing for cochlear implant programming.Methods In users of domestically manufactured cochlear implants(25 ears),the minimum electrical stimulation intensities that could evoke EABRs and induce a behavioral response(T-value)were determined using electrodes No.1,7,13,19 or 24,respectively.The implant was programmed using either the behavioral response threshold(Program ①)or the EABR threshold(Program ②)as the T-value.Aided audiometry thresholds were measured using Programs ① and ②,respectively,and the correlations between the two aided audiometry thresholds and the two T-values were analyzed.Results The wave V latency was(3.30±0.33)ms,(3.41±0.30)ms,(3.52±0.33)ms,(3.59±0.27)ms and(3.54±0.46)ms for electrodes No.1,7,13,19 and 24,respectively,with the T-value set at(83.20±10.40)CL,(89.20±13.52)CL,(101.00±15.48)CL,(102.20±19.26)CL and(110.80±18.97)CL from EABRs,and(79.00±18.91)CL,(80.04±17.04)CL,(86.64±19.38)CL,(90.68±17.37)CL and(104.60±17.91)CL from behavioral responses,respectively;showing a significant correlation between the two sets of T-value(P<0.05),and between aided audiometry thresholds based on the two sets of T-value(P<0.01).Conclusions There is a significant correlation between the electrical stimulation thresholds measured by EABRs and behavioral responses for Chinese-made cochlear implants.EABR testing can be used to assist the programming of domestically manufactured cochlear implants.
