Abstract

Large-scale pig and poultry farming is a pillar industry of China's animal husbandry.It plays a crucial role in ensuring stable supply for the"vegetable basket"project and in meeting the meat consumption needs of residents.As China accelerates the building of a low-carbon and eco-friendly society,promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of animal husbandry has become an inevitable requirement of the times.Achieving low-carbon development in pig and poultry farming,and even moving toward the goal of carbon neutrality in these sectors,is not only a core direction for the high-quality development of animal husbandry,but also an important component of implementing the national dual carbon strategy.This paper reviews the carbon footprint of large-scale pig and poultry farming,analyzing the sources of carbon emissions across the entire chain:from the origin,to the process,and to the terminal stage.Feed production and processing,transportation,and manure treatment are identified as the major emission stages,with these three sources accounting for more than 80%of total emissions.To address these critical emission sources,it is urgent to construct a low-carbon oriented,full-industry-chain emission reduction pathway.Specific measures include:establishing reliable supply chain systems,reducing transportation distances and vehicle idling rates,improving precision farmland management,reducing the application of chemical fertilizers,adopting organic farming practices to minimize input use,increasing the proportion of renewable energy usage,optimizing processing parameters to reduce feed mill energy consumption,adopting energy-efficient environmental control facilities and equipment,improving manure management,and enhancing animal production efficiency.
