Quality-related Evaluation Indicator of Polygoni Multiflori Radix Based on Key Quality Attributes and Doctrine of"Assessing Intrinsic Quality by Outward Appearance"

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the correlation between the morphological characteristics and key quality attributes of Polygoni Multiflori Radix(PMR),initially explain the scientific connotation of"PMR with properties similar to Poria cocos and having strong starchiness are excellent"in the doctrine of"assessing intrinsic quality by outward appearance",and explore the evaluation indicators relevant to quality.Methods:The records on the morphological characteristics and the key quality attributes(origin,growth years,harvesting season,etc.)of genuine-regional PMR were reviewed by consulting ancient Chinese medicine books and literature.31 batches of PMR samples with varying key quality attributes were collected.By using visible spectrophotometry,the amylose content in the PMR samples was quantified as the absorbance intensity at specific wavelengths.A one-way analysis of variance was employed to analyze the trends in unit absorbance changes among PMR samples with different quality attributes.Results:The genuine-regional PMR should process the following characteristics and attributes according to ancient Chinese medicine books and literature:being produced in Deqing,Guangdong Province,having a long growth period,being harvested in autumn,and having strong starchiness.The starchiness strength of Chinese herbal medicines is positively correlated with their amylose content.The results of spectrophotometry show that PMR from the genuine region exhibits significantly higher absorbance values.For PMR from the same region,those with longer growth periods and harvested in autumn demonstrate markedly higher absorbance values.Conclusion:The starchiness strength of PMR is positively correlated with the key quality attributes,making them a viable indicator for evaluating the quality of PMR.关键词
