Abstract

Analyzing the impact of urban construction expansion on carbon emissions can reveal the interrelationship between built-up area changes and carbon emissions in urban development,providing scientific evidence for optimizing urban spatial planning and controlling total carbon emissions.This study uses nighttime light data from the visible infrared imaging radiom-eter suite(VIIRS)aboard the National Polar-Orbiting Partnership(NPP)satellite to construct a linear model for carbon emis-sions.The paper systematically analyzes the evolution of carbon emissions in urban built-up areas of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region from 2012 to 2021,exploring the impact mechanism of built-up area expansion on carbon emissions.The results show a significant positive correlation between the nighttime light index and total carbon emissions in the urban built-up areas,with expansion being the primary driver of carbon emissions growth.From 2012 to 2021,regional carbon emis-sions showed an overall upward trend.As the built-up areas expanded,the spatial aggregation of carbon emissions gradually weakened,though high-high and low-high clustering phenomena still existed.In the future,optimizing spatial planning for urban agglomerations and implementing low-carbon policies can help achieve a more balanced distribution of carbon emis-sions.
