Abstract

The oxidation of Ni nanoparticles can alter their physicochemical properties and consequently affect their service performance.Understanding the oxidation behavior of Ni nanoparticles at the atomic scale is critical for the efficient design and performance tuning of Ni-based nanomaterials.In this study,clean and spherical Ni nanoparticles were prepared via wet-chemical synthesis and in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy,and their high-temperature oxidation behavior under atmospheric-pressure conditions was investigated.Experimental results show that Ni nanoparticles are converted into single-crystal NiO nanocuboids exposing{100}facets by oxidation at 900℃.This morphology arises from the anisotropic growth of isolated oxide nuclei during oxidation,combined with surface reconstruction after the oxidation process.The reduced surface-adsorbed oxygen at high temperatures,along with the thermodynamic drive to lower surface energy,is considered the fundamental cause of this oxidation behavior.
