Mechanical,Oil-water Separation Properties and Applications of Pennisetum,Farfugium Japonicum,and Carduus Nutans Fibers with Bundle Microstructure

Abstract
Plant fibers can be used as reinforcing phase materials and oil-water separation materials.At present,most of the plant fibers used as oil-water separation materials need to be modified to improve the oil-water separation efficiency.Thus,the reinforcing phase function and oil/water separation capability of several natural plant fibers(pennisetum fiber,farfugium japonicum fiber,and carduus nutans fiber)with bundle structures were studied in this work.As the reinforcing phase material,these three plant fibers can be added to the ceramic shell to improve its strength and permeability to gas.For example,with the addition of pennisetum fibers in the corundum-based ceramic shell,the room-temperature strength and the permeability to air are increased by 43%and 100%,respectively.As the oil/water separation material,the three natural fibers possess excellent selective adsorption,oil absorption,and oil retention capabilities.For example,the three fibers are non-wetting to water,while they are wetting to soybean oil and motor oil.The absorption capacities of pennisetum fibers,farfugium japonicum fibers,and carduus nutans fibers to soybean oil are 26.31,40.33,and 47.60 g/g,respectively.After 5 hours of natural draining,their oil retention rates are over 60%.The absorption capacities of the three fibers to engine oil were 27.71,43.80,and 52.09 g/g,respectively.After 5 hours of natural draining,the oil retention rates also remain above 60%.The single separation efficiencies of the three fibers for oil/water(soybean oi,motor oil)mixture exceeded 96.5%,with the maximum of carduus nutans fibers being 98.5%and 99.0%,respectively.Pennisetum fibers,farfugium japonicum fibers,and carduus nutans fibers are competitive candidates for reinforcing phase materials and oil-water separation materials.关键词
